This package includes your appointments before and after surgery, as well as your surgery and mono-focal lenses. It means you won’t use up your out-patient benefit or receive any additional bills from your surgeon (or anaesthetist, if you need one) for eligible treatment.

Background training:
Mr McAlinden has worked hard training over many years at some of the leading ophthalmology institutions around the world. He attended medical school and completed his Ophthalmology training in Wales, achieving Fellowship status with both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and the European Board of Ophthalmology. Mr McAlinden completed his specialist training in Cornea at the world-renowned Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead. He was also awarded the specialist certificate in laser and refractive surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and is a Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences. Additionally, he earned a PGCert in Medical Education from the University of Cambridge. He has also spent time at the Harvard affiliated Massachusetts Eye and Ear hospital in Boston, USA.
Research:
Mr McAlinden also has a strong research background with three research degrees - Masters, PhD and MD, as well as a post-doctoral research fellowship from Flinders University in Australia. He strongly believes that his role as an academic researcher enhances his skills as a doctor by fostering critical thinking, improving problem-solving abilities, contributing to medical and surgical advancements, and keeping him up-to-date with the latest knowledge and technology.
Mr McAlinden has an H-index of 65 with over 190 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has authored a number of book chapters and is frequently invited to lecture and teach at national and international conferences. He holds the position of Visiting Professor at the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai and Wenzhou Medical University in Wenzhou, China.
Other roles:
Mr McAlinden is the current treasurer of the British Society for Refractive Surgery and serves as a PROM advisor to the National Audit for Cataract Surgery with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He supervises and trains junior doctors in the NHS. Additionally, he oversees PhD students, with two currently at Cardiff University working under his supervision on the optimisation of corneal cross-linking therapy for the management of keratoconus and patient-reported outcomes. Mr McAlinden also serves on the editorial board for seven peer-reviewed journals.
