About me
Mr Pollalis is a fellowship-trained Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in all aspects of hip and knee disorders. He is a Consultant at Wycombe General and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals, both part of the Buckinghamshire Hospitals NHS Trust. His private practice is based at the Chiltern and Shelburne Hospitals, Buckinghamshire.
Mr Pollalis prides himself in providing accurate diagnosis and exceptional treatment for his patients, giving them the possibility to resume an active lifestyle and a high quality of life. He is at the forefront of implementing the latest techniques and procedures, both surgical and non-surgical. He strives to offer highest level evidence-based care utilising personalised treatment plans with an excellent bedside manner and a personal touch.
Mr Pollalis has a special interest in hip and knee replacement surgery, both primary and revision. He is particularly keen in minimally invasive partial knee replacement surgery. He is also skilled in arthroscopic (keyhole) knee surgery.
He is renowned for his expertise in rapid recovery and day case hip and knee replacement. He has been the leading surgeon in the development and delivery of the rapid recovery joint replacement pathway in Buckinghamshire NHS Trust and in the last 2 years over 50 of Mr Pollalis' patients have been discharged on the same day after their hip or knee replacement. The pathway encompasses all the latest research around preoperative preparation, intraoperative muscle sparing techniques, postoperative multi modal pain relief and early mobilisation.
Having graduated from Athens Medical School, Greece in 2002, Mr Pollalis completed his specialist trauma and orthopaedic training in Athens, Greece and in Oxford, UK. During his training he was widely exposed to the full spectrum of elective and emergency orthopaedic conditions.
He then undertook extensive specialist fellowship training in joint replacement and worked with some of the UK's foremost surgeons in hip and knee surgery. During his first fellowship in the world-renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford he expanded his experience in primary and revision hip and knee surgery. In particular, he worked extensively with the designer group of the Oxford Partial Knee Replacement, gaining unique expertise in this field. He then completed a second high-volume specialist hip and knee fellowship at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital which has an outstanding reputation for joint replacement surgery. During his third joint replacement fellowship at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, he gained further expertise in the treatment of complex joint and bone problems including surgery for metastatic bone disease.
Mr Pollalis has a strong research background. He has published and presented extensively throughout his career on hip and knee problems, as well as on enhanced recovery after surgery, both in the UK and abroad.
He is also a very keen educator with a passion for teaching and training. He is the Educational Lead for Trauma and Orthopaedics in Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and sits regularly on the ARCP panel assessing the annual progression of orthopaedic trainees of the Oxford Deanery.
Outside of medicine Mr Pollalis enjoys spending time with his family. He has a passion for sailing and has competed in various regattas worldwide. He also enjoys skiing, music, and traveling.
