Abstract: Patient confidentiality is a key tenet in all areas of medicine. However,
circumstances exist where confidentiality must be broken in the patient’s or society’s best
interests. This article presented the General Medical Council guidance on serious
communicable diseases and patient confidentiality and when should confidential information
be disclosed without the consent of patients. I also discussed legal precedents from the UK
and abroad.
