Abstract: Patient confidentiality is a key tenet in all areas of medicine. However,
circumstances exist where confidentiality must be broken in the patient�s or society�s best
interests. This article presented the General Medical Council guidance on serious
communicable diseases and patient confidentiality and when should confidential information
be disclosed without the consent of patients. I also discussed legal precedents from the UK
and abroad.
