About me
Mr Emanuele Garreffa is a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon based at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, where he is also the Programme Director of the BRESO international fellowship programme, which attracts international surgeons coming to the UK to train in breast surgical oncology and oncoplastic breast surgery under his supervision.
Mr Garreffa completed his specialist breast surgery training in Italy, complemented by two fellowships in Derby and Cambridge where he gained further experience in the most advanced oncoplastic breast-preserving operations as well as reconstructive procedures. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and of the European Board of Surgery and in 2021 was awarded the European Certification in Breast Surgical Oncology, making one of the few BRESO certified surgeons in the UK.
Mr Garreffa is an active member of several scientific societies such as the Association of Breast Surgeons (ABS), the European Society of Breast Specialists (EUSOMA), the Oncoplastic Breast Consortium (OPBC) and the European Society of surgical Oncology (ESSO). He is also the UK national representative of the ESSO Young Surgeons and Alumni Club (EYSAC), where he is actively involved in organising training courses and improve access to surgical training and knowledge across Europe.
Mr Garreffa treats all aspects of breast disease, benign or cancerous, and patients with a family history of breast cancer. He utilises the latest oncoplastic techniques such as therapeutic mammoplasty / mastopexy, partial breast reconstruction with chest wall perforator flaps (such as LTAP and LiCAP), full breast reconstruction with implant, LD muscle flap or chest wall perforator flaps, and lipofilling techniques.
Mr Garreffa has published several research works on oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery. One of his main interests is to increase the collaboration between surgeons and oncologist in order to improve the quality of the radiation treatment following complex surgical procedures.
Other specialist interests include Screen-detected breast cancer, newer localisation techniques, patients with family history of breast cancer & risk-reducing surgery, benign breast conditions including all symptoms affecting women of all ages.
