About me

Miss Maria Souvatzi completed her medical school training at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece. This was followed by full specialist training in general surgery before moving to the United Kingdom. She has further qualifications including an MSc in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery from Democritus University of Thrace and more recently a Postgraduate Diploma in Coloproctology from the University of East Anglia.

Within the UK, she embarked upon two advanced colorectal surgery fellowships. The first was at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, covering specialist training in:

Primary colorectal cancer with minimally invasive and open surgery
Surgery for peritoneal metastases with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC)
Surgical treatment of locally advanced/recurrent pelvic cancer including pelvic exenteration and sacrectomy
The second advanced colorectal fellowship was at St Mark’s the National Bowel Hospital and Academic Institute. This covered:

Assessment, investigation and treatment of pelvic floor disorders
Surgical and multidisciplinary management of complex abdomens and intestinal failure
Following this extensive specialist training Miss Souvatzi was appointed as a consultant general and colorectal surgeon in 2019 at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust including St Mary's, Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals, London. She holds the position of clinical governance lead, promoting best practice and patient safety throughout the general surgery department.
