About me
Mr. Sumit Midya is a Consultant General Surgeon with extensive experience in both emergency and elective surgery. He completed his medical education and initial surgical training at the University of Calcutta in India. Since 2002, Mr. Midya has worked in various hospitals across the UK, gaining broad-based experience in all specialties of general surgery. He further honed his expertise with a fellowship in Laparoscopic Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. He has been serving as a Consultant in Emergency and General Surgery at Frimley Park Hospital for the past six years.
As an Emergency Surgeon, Mr. Midya is skilled in managing acutely unwell patients with life-threatening surgical conditions. His broad experience in general surgery enables him to handle complex and varied cases. Electively, his focus is on laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and the repair of abdominal wall and groin hernias via laparoscopic and open techniques. He also performs diagnostic endoscopies, including OGD, colonoscopies and flexible sigmoidoscopies.
Annually, Mr. Midya performs over 100 laparoscopic cholecystectomies, with half of them being "hot" cholecystectomies performed during acute presentations. He also performs around 50-60 groin hernia repairs and 30 abdominal wall hernia repairs each year. His emergency surgical procedures include approximately 25 laparotomies and 80-100 laparoscopic appendectomies. He also performs around 125 diagnostic colonoscopies and 100 upper GI endoscopies annually, further contributing to the diagnosis and treatment of various gastrointestinal conditions.
Mr. Midya is the Clinical Lead for Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) / Same Day Emergency Care (Surgical SDEC) at Frimley Park Hospital, where he has been instrumental in developing pathways to improve the efficiency of emergency general surgery services. Beyond his clinical work, he is passionate about education, teaching medical students, junior doctors, physician associates, and advanced nurse practitioners. He actively participates in Quality Improvement projects and Clinical Governance meetings, ensuring that the highest standards of care are consistently delivered.
