About me
Dr. Steven Whatmough is a dual-trained Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine and General Practice, with extensive experience across elite sport, musculoskeletal medicine, and NHS leadership.
Dr. Whatmough completed his specialist training in Sport and Exercise Medicine in Leeds, following postgraduate qualifications including a Master's degree in Sports Medicine from University College London and a Postgraduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound from the University of East London. He has also completed both his MRCGP and MRCP examinations.
He has worked across a broad range of settings, from high-performance sport to frontline NHS services. His previous roles include working with the English Football Association, Burnley Football Club, professional cycling teams, and as a Consultant in Sports Medicine for the European Golf Tour. These positions involved supporting athlete health and performance at both academy and senior levels.
Currently, Dr. Whatmough is the Clinical Lead for Rehabilitation at the Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire Strategic Clinical Network, where he leads the ACCESS4ALL programme. This is a region-wide initiative focused on improving access, equity, and quality in rehabilitation and prehabilitation services. His work brings together NHS providers, local authorities, community organisations, and digital solutions to transform rehabilitation pathways for people with long-term conditions.
Dr. Whatmough continues to run specialist musculoskeletal clinics across England. His clinical interests include diagnostic and interventional ultrasound procedures, sports-related injuries, persistent and complex musculoskeletal pain, and evidence-based rehabilitation planning. He combines advanced imaging techniques with targeted interventions to support accurate diagnosis, relieve symptoms, and optimise recovery and performance for patients of all activity levels.
He regularly uses diagnostic ultrasound in clinic to examine the structure and function of muscles, tendons, joints, and soft tissues in real time. Where needed, he has rapid access to advanced imaging such as MRI and CT, and he reviews imaging results directly with patients to guide clinical decision-making.
Dr. Whatmough is also skilled in a wide range of image-guided injection therapies, using real-time ultrasound guidance to ensure precision and safety. He routinely performs minimally invasive procedures for spinal and peripheral joint conditions, using injectates such as corticosteroids, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and hyaluronic acid. In addition, he offers extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) for chronic tendinopathies.
Outside of clinical practice, Steven is a keen cyclist and regular gym-goer, embodying the principles of active living he promotes in his professional life.
