About me
Anna Gkountelia is a Consultant Ophthalmic and Oculoplastic Surgeon, holding a substantive post at Queen's Hospitals, BHRUT NHS Trust since January 2020.
She had subspecialist training in the field of oculoplastic (eyelid) and lacrimal (tear duct) surgery in London, Reading and Cambridge. Her particular area of clinical interest lies in the management of eyelid conditions ranging from aesthetic to reconstructive in nature. She qualified at the National & Kapodistrian Medical School of Athens, Greece in 2004, and underwent postgraduate medical training in Ophthalmology in Athens, Greece. This was followed by extensive training in the UK for 3 and a half years with an Oculoplastics, Orbital and Lacrimal fellowships at Reading, Cambridge, and London, including a fellowship at the multidisciplinary craniofacial unit at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital were I gained expertise to manage complex skin cancer reconstruction, thyroid eye disease and periocular trauma.
She plans and provides treatment to a wide range of conditions of the eyelids and periocular region, reconstructive eyelid surgery- including post-Mohs surgery reconstruction, watery eyes (external and endoDCR surgery), blepharospasm, TED, ocular and periocular NF.
She has been the lead for Eye Casualty services for 4 years, practicing general ophthalmology and supporting the emergency eye clinic, working closely with the Clinical Leads and ED colleagues across London to improve the Ophthalmology emergency and out of hours services. Being the Regional Ophthalmic Practitioner Training (OPT- based on OCCCF) Lead for the North East London area, she is promoting the development of Ophthalmology skills for nurse, optometrists and opticians.
As well as being a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, she is a Member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society, the European Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and The Greek Ophthalmology Society
