About me
I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and have worked for the NHS since I qualified in 1994, and I am still passionate about my work there.
Throughout my career I have specialised in working with people who have experienced abuse, or other trauma, in childhood and/or adulthood. I am skilled in helping people understand the links between attachment difficulties in childhood and mental and physical health difficulties in adulthood: including low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, depression, work stress, somatic symptoms, difficulties managing anger, phobias and all anxiety disorders. I use an attachment-based approach to help people use this understanding - which is created together - to enable them to develop a more positive sense of self and more fulfilling relationships in every aspect of their lives.
I am skilled in using a range of therapeutic models including CBT, and have completed further training in psychodynamic psychotherapy. I have additional qualifications in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) which is a highly effective therapy to help process psychological trauma and distress, including PTSD and complex PTSD. I offer psychological therapy to adults and adolescents as well as systemic therapy to couples and families.
I have many years’ experience of offering psychological therapy to neurodivergent people, including autistic adults and adolescents - especially women and girls - as well as offering support and advice to their families, support workers and other professional staff. I have a particular interest in helping autistic and neurodivergent people - including people with ADHD - understand the impact of psychological trauma on their lives.
My clinical practice is LGBTQ+ affirming and anti-racist, with many decades’ experience of working with and empowering people with a wide range of protected characteristics, including physical and learning disabilities. I am alert to power dynamics in society and will give space to exploring the ways in which prejudice may have impacted the mental health of the people I work with. I have a particular interest in gender issues, including peri-menopausal difficulties.
In many decades of challenging and rewarding work I have developed lots of creative ways to adapt my clinical practice to meet the individual needs of each person I work with, including using humour and bringing my own humanity into my professional work.
I offer online therapy sessions, including using Bilateral Base which is a specialist secure online platform for EMDR.
