About me
Mr Ciaran J Walsh MB BSc MCh FRCSI
Mr Walsh is a Dublin graduate having received an honours degree from The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1984. He was a surgical trainee in Dublin where he got his fellowship in surgery (FRCSI 1998). After this he went to The Medical College of Virginia as research fellow to Dr Harvey Sugerman where he studied neutrophil kinetics in sepsis. This research work was presented at premier scientific meetings in the USA and won a number of prestigious research awards. The research work led to many peer reviewed publications and a Master of Surgery (MCh) thesis which was awarded by University College Dublin in 1993. After this two years of basic science research he came to the UK as a surgical registrar at The Royal London and Colchester Hospitals and later was appointed as senior registrar at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. From Cambridge he was awarded a Clinical fellowship in Colorectal Surgery with Dr Fazio at The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland Ohio where he worked for one year before returning to Cambridgein 1997.
He was appointed to Wirral NHS trust as a consultant general and Colorectal surgeon in 1998 and has worked there since with particular interests in surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure, surgical nutrition and hernia surgery as well as colorectal cancer and other aspects of colorectal surgery including proctology and colonoscopy. He was lead clinician for the introduction of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery to Wirral trust in 2007 and is a core member of the Merseyside advanced colorectal cancer multidiscipliniary team meeting.
He was lead clinician on the Wirral Trust's Nutrition Support Team and Chairman of the Trust's nutrition steering group for many years. He is involved in nutritional education and is on the Education and Training committee of the British Association of Ennteral and Parenteral Nutrition (BAPEN). He has co edited a book on surgical technique and published original articles and book chapters on surgical nutrition and other areas of colorectal surgery. He has been an invited lecturer at regional, national and international meetings with regard to nutritional care in surgery as well as intestinal failure, abdominal wall hernias and reconstruction and other areas of colorectal surgery.
Mr Walsh is President elect of The North West Surgical Society. He was previously Hon Secretary and vice president of the coloproctology section of The Royal Society of Medicine and is currently on council of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. He represents Cheshire and Merseyside on the Clinical Reference Group for NHS commissioning of specialised colorectal services.
