About me
Mr. Alfredo Tonsi is a respected Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with expertise in the surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, bowel cancer, and benign proctology, including complex anal fistula, hemorrhoids, anal pain, and rectal prolapse. He is also fully proficient in performing laparoscopic and open abdominal wall hernia surgeries, such as inguinal hernias.
He completed his Higher Surgical Training in London and the Southwest Thames region, during which he received extensive training in advanced minimally invasive surgery. Following this, he undertook further specialist training in complex anal fistula and inflammatory bowel surgery at St. Mark's Hospital, St. George's, and St. Thomas' Hospital in London.
During this time, Mr. Tonsi gained significant experience in minimally invasive surgery for bowel cancer, ileo-anal pouch surgery, complex fistula repair, and deep endometriosis.
Furthermore, he engaged in a scientific collaboration with the Hepatobiliary Department of the University of Verona, Italy, which culminated in a PhD awarded in 2012. His thesis has led to publications discussing the association of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) with primary duodenal cancer.
Additionally, Mr. Tonsi is a national trainer in colonoscopy, accredited by the JAG Endoscopy Training System. As a colorectal surgeon, he was part of the Royal Derby Endometriosis Centre team, which achieved accreditation from the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy in 2021.
Currently, he serves as the Surgical IBD lead at Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where he collaborates closely with the IBD dietician team and gastroenterology colleagues to optimise the care of Crohn's patients prior to their surgeries. Furthermore, he holds the position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
