About me
Mr Wood qualified in 2002 from the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff with an additional intercalated BSc alongside his medical degree. Mr Wood completed his specialist training in General and Upper Gastrointestinal surgery within the South Wales region. He also undertook a Senior Fellowship position for 12 months in Upper GI surgery in Adelaide, Australia. This allowed him to gain further specialist expertise and experience in all aspects of oesophageal, gastric, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bariatric surgery. Mr Wood completed a Masters degree in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MMIS) with the University of Adelaide which gave him the opportunity to gain an advanced theoretical and clinical understanding of minimally invasive / laparoscopic procedure, consolidate advanced clinical skills and techniques, and gain exposure to robotic surgery.
Mr Wood is a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and performs operating lists, outpatient clinics and endoscopy at Grange University Hospital, Royal Gwent Hospital, Nevill Hall Hospital and Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr Hospital. His specialist interests include laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for gastro-oesophageal reflux (heartburn), hiatus hernia, oesophageal achalasia, gallstone / gallbladder conditions, and hernia surgery (laparoscopic and open techniques) including recurrent hernias.
Mr Wood is an accredited Upper GI endoscopist, and endoscopy trainer, performing more than 400 gastroscopies per year and has expertise in the assessment and management of oesophageal and stomach conditions. Mr Wood has a keen interest in medical and surgical education, he completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGCE), he is a supervisor for trainee surgeons, course director and tutor for Royal College surgical skills courses and examiner for Cardiff University medical students.
Within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Mr Wood has led a role in improving outpatient services for General Surgery and clinical lead for establishing a Bariatric / Obesity Surgical service in South East Wales. Mr Wood also has an interest in Quality Improvement and has worked with the Welsh Government and surgeons across Wales to improve pathways and waiting times for patients. Mr Wood has also given numerous presentations and national and international conferences on subjects such as 'optimising post-operative recovery in upper GI surgery' and 'curriculum requirements for surgical trainees'.
