About me
I have 29 years of experience of running a breast service at Frenchay and Southmead Hospitals(when alll of Bristol breast service was centralised) Bristol. Initially under Simon Cawthorn in Frenchay amd later alongside him as a colleague and an independent Consultant for the next 21 years.
We pioneered one stop breast service, stand-alone breast service in 1995. Our unit was the first to achieve 2 charter marks and the first to receive gold award on peer review for breast cancer service in the south west. We have never looked back.
I have been along with Simon Cawthorn amongst the first in the country in using Ultrasound by a surgeon as an adjunct to clinical assessment. I am only a handful of breast surgeons alongside Miss Govindarajulu(Southmead Hospital) currently adept at using ultrasound in the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on the breast. My experience allows me Ito do diagnostic biopsies, vacuum assisted excision of breast lesions, localisation of impalpable breast lesions which is usually the exclusive domain of radiology.
I have published several peer reviewed articles on ultrasound by surgeons and continue to do so. My pioneering technique ultrasound guided technique of breast surgery under dilutions local anaesthesia has been published extensively in ‘Surgeon’ journal of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Journal of preoperative surgery and EJSO.
I have extensive experience in dealing with routine and complex breast cancer and benign breast surgery. I have a particular interest in minimally invasive breast surgery.
My other roles.
I have lead the breast service as Clinical Lead until 2012 when I’ll health prompted me to démit office. I have been a QA ( quality assurance) Lead Surgeon for the NHSBSP( breast screening) for the south west for six years from 2008 - 3014.
I enjoy my role as a teacher, trainer for breast trainees. I have been an Examiner for the MRCS for thé Royal Collège of Surgeons of Edinburgh for surgical trainees from 2004.
I have been a past Surgical College Tutor (for Royal College of Surgeons,England) for surgical trainees and also been a Unit Coordinator for medical students for the North Bristol Academy
I have had a very fulfilling career. Being a Surgeon is my sole metier. I enjoy working as a surgeon v
