About me

Dr Shahed Islam is a Consultant Cardiologist who provides private consultations at Circle Hospital and Spire Dunedin Hospital, serving Berkshire and the surrounding areas. He holds a substantive NHS appointment at the Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

He offers expert assessment and management for patients presenting with a wide range of cardiac symptoms and conditions, including chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, blackouts, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, valvular heart disease, and cardiomyopathies. He also undertakes comprehensive pre-operative cardiovascular assessments for patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery.

Dr Islam is committed to delivering thorough, compassionate, and patient-centred care. He ensures that patients are fully involved in decision-making and consistently applies the latest evidence-based practices to achieve the best possible outcomes.

After obtaining his primary medical qualification (MBBS with Merit) from Guy's, King's and St Thomas's School of Medicine in 2008, Dr Shahed Islam was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP), London, in 2012.

He has over a decade of specialist cardiology training at some of the leading centres in the UK, including the Barts Heart Centre in London and the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre. He completed dedicated fellowships in both coronary intervention and management of heart function impairment. In addition, he is experienced in non-invasive cardiac imaging, performing echocardiography, CT coronary angiography, and implantation of permanent pacemaker systems.

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Islam has a strong academic interest in cardiovascular medicine. He undertook two years of full-time clinical research, leading to the award of an MD (Res) in 2015, and has published his work in several peer-reviewed journals. His research interests include post-resuscitation care in cardiac arrest survivors and cardiac rehabilitation following critical illness.

At the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Dr Islam serves as Clinical Lead for Cardiac Rehabilitation, reflecting his commitment to improving recovery and long-term outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease.
