About me
Dr Sampath De Silva is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Ashford and St Peter’s NHS trust. He manages patients with a variety of gastroenterological conditions (with a special interest in liver disease). He performs regular upper (gastroscopy) and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy (colonoscopy/flexible sigmoidoscopy) procedures.
He completed his undergraduate training at St George’s, University of London, and as part of his advanced gastroenterology training worked at the Liver and Gastroenterology Units at the Royal London Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital and King’s College Hospital. He was awarded a PhD (from Queen Mary, University of London) for research on liver disease in 2019. He has authored medical journal articles and has presented his work at local and national meetings.
He was selected as Clinical Team Member of the year at Ashford and St Peter’s NHS trust in 2021 by his peers in recognition of his work in developing the hepatology service at St Peter’s Hospital, in particular with regards to the management of patient with liver conditions including liver cirrhosis and viral hepatitis.
He is endoscopy training lead (and oversees the training of endoscopists) in both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy at Ashford and St Peter's NHS trust. He supervises the training of junior doctors in gastroenterology at Ashford and St Peter’s NHS trust. He is an honorary lecturer in the department of Biological Sciences at the Royal Holloway, University of London.
Areas of interest
1. Liver disease (Hepatology): Abnormal liver function tests, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, liver cirrhosis, viral liver disease, autoimmune liver disease (including autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis);
2. Endoscopy: Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy), Lower gastrointestinal endoscopy (flexible sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy, including polypectomy);
3. Gastroenterology: Gastro-oesophageal reflux, Indigestion, heartburn, bloating, coeliac disease, abnormal imaging of the gastrointestinal tract or liver.
