About me
I have been a Consultant ENT Surgeon at Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust (PHUT) since July 2018.
I treat all aspects of General ENT, and have a specialist interest in Head and Neck Cancer, Salivary gland disease, and Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery.
I am currently the Lead Clinician for Head and Neck and Thyroid Cancer at PHUT. I am also the Clinical Lead for Head and Neck Cancer in the Wessex Cancer Alliance. I am a member of the PHU Joint Parathyroid clinic, which sees and treats over 150 patients annually with parathyroid disease. I use the latest surgical technology, including Intraoperative nerve monitoring, parathyroid auto-fluoresence, and rapid access parathyroid hormone testing. I am trained in
both transoral laser and transoral robotic surgery, the latter including a period
of training with Dr Greg Weinstein in Philadelphia.
My choice to enter ENT
training was driven by a desire to become a Head and Neck Cancer surgeon.
I love all aspects of Head and Neck surgery. I find the anatomy fascinating
and the surgery both technically challenging and thoroughly enjoyable. I enjoy
the team based structure of Head and Neck surgery, and work well with other
members of the multidisciplinary team.
Above all, I enjoy working with
patients, and striving to achieve the best possible outcomes in each individual
case, in what can often be a difficult and demanding situation.
My ENT training was based in the Wessex Region, working alongside a number of Surgeons across Hampshire, Dorset and South East Wiltshire. I passed my FRCS examination in April 2016 and was awarded the Gold Medal for the highest exam score in the UK. Following my UK based training, I undertook a Fellowship in Advanced Head and Neck and Skull Base surgery at the world renowned Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, under the tutelage of Professor Ben Panizza.
I have an interest in medical academia. I believe that research is vital to push
forward the boundaries of medical science, and strive to improve patient
outcomes. My interest was first sparked when I undertook my intercalated
BSc, and my dissertation, “The effect of Simvastatin on the Stability of Carotid
Atherosclerotic Plaques”, was awarded the Altounyan prize for the best BSc
project. During my registrar training in ENT I spent two years investigating
prognostic markers in HPV related Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
This work has led to a number of national and
international presentations, several publications, and I was also awarded the prize for “Best Clinical Paper” at the
International Academy of Oral Oncology meeting in Rhodes, Greece, in 2013.
I submitted my thesis “Identifying prognostic markers in Oropharyngeal
Carcinoma” to the University of Southampton, and was awarded the degree of
Doctor of Medicine in July 2015.
My GMC Number is 6129712.
