About me

Dr Catherine Barnes is a Practitioner Psychologist and Clinical Director of Alinea Psychologies. She works with adults, children and young people experiencing a range of psychological and emotional difficulties, with particular experience in depression, anxiety, self-esteem, relationship and interpersonal difficulties, and adjusting to significant changes in life.

Catherine is particularly interested in understanding difficulties within the context of the whole person and their life. Anxiety or low mood can sometimes develop following an obvious event or transition, while at other times people find themselves struggling with worries about judgement, uncertainty, relationships, identity or the direction their life is taking without fully understanding why.
Anxiety is a significant area of Catherine's clinical work. She works with adults experiencing worry, overthinking, fear of judgement, uncertainty and anxiety associated with relationships or changes in life. She also works with children and young people experiencing anxiety around school, friendships, confidence, new situations and periods of adjustment.

Rather than treating anxiety as simply a collection of symptoms, Catherine works with clients to understand what may be driving it and what is keeping it going. Depending on the individual, this may involve exploring patterns of thinking and avoidance, self-esteem, previous experiences, relationships, changes in circumstances, or questions around identity, uncertainty and belonging.

Catherine also has a particular clinical and research interest in depression. Her doctoral research focused on the treatment of depression, and she has undertaken further specialist training in evidence-based psychological therapies for depression, including Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) and Person-Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression (PCE-CfD).

Her integrative approach allows her to draw on CBT, interpersonal, psychodynamic and existential perspectives according to the needs of the individual. This means therapy can focus both on reducing distress in the present and on developing a deeper understanding of the patterns, relationships and experiences that may be contributing to it.
