About me

Dr Tantry is a Consultant Paediatrician at Leeds Children's Hospital, one of the largest and busiest children's hospitals in the UK, caring for over 50,000 children every year. He also serves as the Clinical Lead for the General Paediatric Department. With over 26 years of experience in general paediatrics, he has helped children and families navigate a wide range of health challenges, and this work remains something he is truly passionate about.

His medical journey began in India, where he completed his primary medical qualification before going on to undertake postgraduate studies in paediatrics at one of India's busiest children's hospitals. He then continued his training in the UK, gaining experience at some of the country's leading children's hospitals, including those in Birmingham and Leeds. His qualifications include MBBS, MD Paediatrics, FRCPCH, and an MSc in Child Health, and he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

He has been a Consultant in Leeds since 2013 and has developed extensive skills in managing a broad range of childhood illnesses. These include recurrent wheeze and asthma, heart murmurs, abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhoea, headaches, neurological problems, reflux, cow's milk intolerance and allergy, chest problems, growth and nutrition issues, and newborn problems, among many others. He also has a special interest in paediatric nephrology the management of common kidney conditions in children including recurrent urine infections, nephrotic syndrome, urinary frequency and urgency, and bedwetting.

One area he feels particularly strongly about is Long COVID and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in children and young people. He was instrumental in setting up the Long COVID/fatigue clinic in Leeds and has supported many children and their families through what can be a very difficult and often misunderstood condition. Working alongside a fantastic team of therapists, he has been able to make a real difference to young people's lives. This work was featured on BBC Look North.

He has also been involved in developing an innovative system to detect lead poisoning in children in Leeds work that he is incredibly proud of. As a result, Leeds is now the only city in the UK to actively screen at-risk children for lead poisoning, and his team have already identified many cases that would otherwise have gone undetected. This work was featured in the Financial Times and an associated podcast, Untold: Toxic Legacy, for which he was interviewed, and he hopes that it will inspire similar initiatives across the country.
