About me
Mr James is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with dual expertise in paediatric orthopaedics and adult and children's trauma surgery. He is currently based at The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton, where he delivers comprehensive care for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions affecting children and adolescents, alongside his role in the hospital's major trauma service.
With an international career that has included clinical and leadership roles in the UK, Australia, and sub-Saharan Africa, Mr James is known for his thoughtful, evidence-based approach and his commitment to delivering safe, effective care that prioritises the long-term function and well-being of his patients.
Mr James graduated in 2002 from the Guy's, King's and St Thomas' Medical Schools in London. He went on to complete his orthopaedic surgical training in the capital before undertaking two prestigious paediatric orthopaedic fellowships:
Beit Cure International Hospital in Malawi
The Children's Hospital at Westmead in Sydney, Australia one of Australia's leading paediatric surgical centres
These international fellowships allowed Mr James to develop advanced skills in treating complex paediatric orthopaedic conditions in both high-resource and resource-limited healthcare environments.
Mr James began his consultant career at The Royal London Hospital in 2013. After two years, he returned to Malawi, where he served as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Medical Director at Beit Cure International Hospital for four yearssupporting surgical training and advancing orthopaedic care in the region.
Since returning to the UK, Mr James has held a substantive post as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital, where he treats both elective and emergency cases, and contributes to the adult and children's trauma service at this designated major trauma centre.
Mr James provides surgical and non-surgical treatment for a broad range of paediatric orthopaedic conditions, including:
Hip disorders including developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), SUFE, and Perthes disease
Limb deformities and length discrepancies using guided growth and limb reconstruction techniques
Neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy
Children's foot and ankle conditions including clubfoot (CTEV), flat feet, and cavovarus foot deformity
Bone and joint infections
General trauma and fractures in children and adolescents
Mr James believes strongly in shared decision-making, ensuring that families are fully informed about all treatment options both surgical and non-surgical before making decisions about care. He takes time during initial consultations to assess the causes of each child's symptoms, tailoring treatment plans to the child's condition, age, lifestyle, and long-term development goals.
He is particularly committed to ensuring that surgery is only offered when necessary, helping children and parents understand that many orthopaedic issues can be managed without an operation.
Mr James is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London, where he has contributed to the Orthopaedic Trauma Sciences programme since 2014. He is actively involved in global orthopaedic education and continues to support the development of surgical training and service provision in Africa, particularly in resource-limited settings.
Outside of his clinical practice, Mr James is passionate about the outdoors and enjoys both cycling and bouldering, which align with his belief in movement, mobility, and lifelong physical activity.
