About me
Mr Andrade has pioneered and developed nationally and internationally recognised techniques and training programmes for other surgeons in two main areas: hip preservation surgery, particularly in young adults, and hip and knee joint replacements.
He has also had a keen interest in malrotation problems of the lower limbs and how they present as knee or hip pain. He performs derotation osteotomies of tibiae and / or femora on a regular basis.
He was a member of the original consultant steering group for the Centres of Clinical Excellence (CCE) which was rebranded to Circle Health. He became the chairman of the steering group leading up to the building and opening of Circle Reading in August 2012, when he then became the clinical chairman for the hospital until December 2016. Circle was at that time the largest consultant partnership in Europe.
He is widely recognised as a UK pioneer of hip arthroscopy. Since then he has been at the forefront of the evolving surgical techniques in arthroscopic and other types of hip preservation surgery, and this led to him establishing a visiting surgeon programme where surgeons from the UK and across the world are able to join him to learn these surgical techniques. He was also involved in a surgical mentorship program for arthroscopic hip surgery, where surgeons could spend time with him initially, and then he would go to their institution to support them with their first few cases.
Mr Andrade is regularly invited to lecture nationally and internationally on hip arthroscopy and other associated topics. He has also been heavily involved with teaching on national and international courses, run both by industry and international societies.
In 2016 he established a Hip Arthroscopy Fellowship Programme, sponsored by Smith & Nephew, which allows senior trainees unrivalled experience in a surgical unit with two very high-volume hip arthroscopy surgeons.
An active member of the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA ďż˝ The Hip Preservation Society), since it was founded in 2008, he became the membership secretary of the organisation in October 2012 and was the host chairman for its Annual Scientific Meeting in Cambridge in September 2015. He is the 2020-21 President of ISHA ďż˝ The Hip Preservation Society.
Mr Andrade sits on the Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry (NAHR) user group for the British Hip Society and is active in trying to maximise surgeon engagement with submitting data to the registry.
Hip and knee joint replacements (arthroplasty)
Mr Andrade established a local joint registry in 2002 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, (predating the national joint registry), and then established a Lower Limb Arthroplasty Fellowship Programme in 2004. This has been a heavily sought-after fellowship as it has provided an excellent opportunity for senior trainees to perform large numbers of hip and knee joint replacements before then going on to their consultant posts.
He performs primary hip and knee replacement surgery with high performing bearings and carries out a large number of hip resurfacing procedures, in young adults, that can return patients to a very high level of activity. He also regularly performs revision hip surgery for failed hip replacements using uncemented implants with high performing bearings to optimise restoration of function.
His interest in optimising treatment of infections in Orthopaedic patients led him to join forces with a consultant microbiologist and form the Combined Orthopaedic and Medical Microbiology Service (COMMS) at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, in 2004. Since then weekly multidisciplinary team meetings have been held to discuss the management of all patients on antibiotics in the Orthopaedic unit. A database has captured data on all these cases and has led to a number of publications.
