About me

Mr Tony Andrade is a leading consultant orthopaedic surgeon based in Reading, Berkshire, with a specialist interest in hip and knee surgery, particularly young adult hip disorders. He is internationally recognised for his work in hip arthroscopy, hip preservation, and joint replacement surgery, receiving referrals from across the South of England and beyond.

After completing his higher surgical training in the Wessex region, Mr Andrade pursued a fellowship in hip and knee surgery at Sportsmed-SA in Adelaide, Australia, where he first gained expertise in hip arthroscopy - now a cornerstone of his practice. He also undertook a trauma surgery fellowship in Minneapolis, USA.

Appointed to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 2002, he established a comprehensive hip arthroscopy and preservation service, which quickly evolved into a tertiary referral centre. He is a UK pioneer in treating conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), labral tears, and malrotation syndromes - often presenting as persistent hip or knee pain. He frequently performs derotation osteotomies of the femur and tibia to address complex biomechanical misalignments.

Mr Andrade also performs hip resurfacing, primary joint replacements, and revision surgeries using high-performance, uncemented implants. His focus is on restoring function and enabling high levels of activity, particularly in younger, active patients. He has a long-standing interest in managing orthopaedic infections, and in 2004 co-founded the Combined Orthopaedic and Medical Microbiology Service (COMMS) at Royal Berkshire Hospital. This innovative service involves weekly multidisciplinary meetings and has led to several published studies.

Committed to surgical education, Mr Andrade founded a Lower Limb Arthroplasty Fellowship in 2004 and a Hip Arthroscopy Fellowship in 2016 (sponsored by Smith & Nephew). Both fellowships attract senior trainees from the UK and abroad. He also leads a visiting surgeon programme and is involved in hands-on surgical mentorship internationally.

In 2015, Mr Andrade was among the first UK surgeons to adopt acetabular labral reconstruction for failed labral repairs - now a recognised expert in this area. He contributed a chapter on the technique to the textbook Hip Preservation Surgery: Open, Arthroscopic and Endoscopic Techniques.

He has lectured widely and taught on numerous national and international surgical courses. A founding member of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA), he served as its Membership Secretary and hosted its Annual Meeting in Cambridge in 2015. He was elected ISHA President for the 2020-2021 term.

Mr Andrade is also a member of the Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry (NAHR) steering group under the British Hip Society, supporting national data collection and surgical quality improvement.

From 2012 to 2016, he served as Clinical Chairman of Circle Reading Hospital, having played a key role in the hospital's development. At the time, Circle was the largest consultant-led partnership in Europe.
