About me

Dr Indrajith Karunaratne is a highly experienced Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) with over two decades of experience in the NHS, including more than 10 years at the consultant level. He currently serves as the Medical Lead of the Sexual Health Service at Gloucestershire Health & Care NHS Foundation Trust, where he provides strategic and clinical leadership to a service supporting a population of over 600,000.

Dr Karunaratne is an expert in all aspects of genitourinary medicine, with particular expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, HIV infection, and both male and female sexual dysfunction. He also offers support in contraception and has a special interest in psychosexual medicine, having led the restructuring and development of the psychosexual service in Gloucestershire.

Throughout his career, Dr Karunaratne has demonstrated a strong commitment to service improvement, clinical governance, and education. He has played a key role in the integration of GUM and contraception services, and he currently the clinical audit lead of the department. From March 2015 to December 2018, he served as the Chair of the South West branch of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), promoting training, networking, and high standards of care across the region.

In addition to his NHS work, Dr Karunaratne is dedicated to delivering high-quality, personalised care to his patients and offers private consultations at the Winfield Hospital in Gloucester.
