About me

Professor Lyndon Mason is a highly qualified Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in Foot and Ankle Surgery at Spire Liverpool Hospital. He underakes his NHS work at the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation, where he is the foot and ankle lead. He is also an Honorary Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Liverpool where he is the Musculoskeletal System and Orthopaedic Specialty Lead in the School of Medicine. Before joining Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Professor Mason completed two British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society travelling fellowships in the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, America and the Carl Gustav Carus University, Dresden, Germany. In Liverpool, Professor Mason obtained the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Gold Fellowship Award.

In 2020, the prestigious Hunterian Professorship was bestowed on Professor Mason for his pioneering work on ankle fractures. This award is considered the proudest honour of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and is given to surgeons of eminence who have significantly contributed to the field of surgery. Professor Mason's pioneering research has become nationally and internationally recognised, winning 17 national and international prizes in the last 8 years. In addition to the Hunterian Professorship, Professor Mason has also been awarded the Robert Jones gold medal and Association prize in 2017 and the Jaques Duparc prize from the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 2018. Professor Mason has been a lead on research that has won the Chan Cheng memorial prize, the highest award from the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society on 3 separate occasions. With over 100 publications (including national reports, books, book chapters and journal articles) and over 100 scientific presentations in learned societies, Professor Mason is nationally respected and recognised as an innovator.

Professor Mason is a known National educator, as an invited faculty member for courses by the British Orthopaedic Association, Royal College of Surgeons of England, AO International and the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. In the last two years, he has been an invitied key note speaker at the Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Professor Mason sits on council of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, as the Outcomes Committee chair, and takes responsibility for the National foot and ankle registry. He has co-authored 6 national reports in his roles with the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Professor Mason focuses solely on the treatment and management of foot and ankle problems. He sees patients with various clinical presentations and symptoms, including: foot arthritis, foot and ankle pain, sports-related foot and ankle conditions, bunions and other foot deformities such as hammer toe, claw toe and mallet toe. He has several years of experience performing procedures such as arthroscopy, minimally invasive techniques and non-invasive procedures.
