About me
Dr Brown was appointed as a consultant in gastroenterology and general (internal) medicine at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital in 2013.
Dr Brown has acquired extensive experience and interest in a broad range of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. He has particular expertise in inflammatory bowel disease and clinical nutrition. He manages complex gastrointestinal disease, with experience in the use of cutting edge biological drug therapies and is the clinical lead for nutrition at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital.
Dr Brown�s interests include the diagnosis and management of functional bowel diseases (such as irritable bowel syndrome, small bowel dysmotility and functional dyspepsia/gastroparesis), reflux/hiatus hernia, swallowing difficulties; general hepatology (liver disease), diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, and endoscopic cancer surveillance.
Dr Brown has an active research portfolio which spans his clinical interests, and he is the Associate Clinical Director for Research in Medicine in Basingstoke Hospital. His research includes clinical trials of investigational drugs, surveillance and endoscopy.
Dr Brown began his career at the University of Bristol in 1995, initially achieving a first class honours degree in anatomy in 1998. This was followed be his medical degree in 2001, graduating with honours. During medical school he was awarded numerous prizes, including for medicine, paediatrics and anatomy.
He gained his MRCP qualification in 2004 and went on the specialise in gastroenterology in the Wessex deanery, achieving a broad range of skills in all aspects of gastroenterology.
Dr Brown spent 3 years studying for his PhD in the prestigious Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre NIHR Biomedical Research Unit, graduating in 2012. He returned to Hampshire to complete his clinical training and was appointed as a consultant in Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust the following year.
In 2018 Dr Brown became a Follow of the Royal College of Physicians of London.
Dr Brown works collaboratively with his patients and colleagues. He undertakes a joint medical/surgical clinic for his NHS patients with complex bowel disease. He practices up-to-date, evidence-based medicine including dietary, pharmacological and lifestyle treatments. He receives excellent feedback on his practice from patients and colleagues.
Dr Brown is an enthusiastic teacher and acts as both an educational and clinical supervisor for junior medical doctors in Basingstoke. He audits his practice annual and partakes in annual appraisal.
Dr Brown is very experienced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopist with expertise in screening and surveillance. He is skilled at the removal of colonic polyps.
Dr Brown grew up in Berkshire. He is a keen sportsman who played football to a high level. He is married with two children.
