About me

Dr Sibu Varghese is a Consultant Gastroenterologist based at Addenbrooke's Hospital, part of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and also sees patients privately at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital in Impington, Cambridge. He has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal conditions, including gastro-oesophageal reflux, Barrett's oesophagus, gastric (stomach) disorders Coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome. He also has a particular interest in pancreatic conditions including pancreatitis, pancreatic cysts, and offers screening for both pancreatic and bowel cancer.
Dr Varghese is highly skilled in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. He performs gastroscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound, and is experienced in advanced procedures complex endoscopic polypectomy, stricture dilatation, endoluminal stent insertion and diagnostic and therapeutic Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) techniques, including cyst drainage, Coeliac plexus blocks and neurolysis. As an accredited bowel screening colonoscopist, he carries out all private consultations and procedures himself at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, working closely with teams in radiology, surgery, pathology and dietetics to provide comprehensive and personalised care.
He was appointed as a Consultant in 2015 at St George's University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London, before moving to Cambridge in 2017. He is the Programme Director for the Cambridge Bowel Cancer Screening Centre and serves as a Screening Professional Clinical Advisor for Endoscopy for the Screening Quality Assurance Services, NHS England. In addition, he is the Clinical Lead for the Endoscopy Training Academy at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, where he delivers nationally recognised endoscopy training courses.
Dr Varghese is committed to maintaining high standards of care through continuous professional development and is actively involved in teaching and training. He has set up and currently runs a dedicated medical pancreatic clinic and the Cambridge Endoscopy Training Academy. His research interests focus on the early detection of gastrointestinal cancers, pancreatic disorders and developments in enhanced endoscopic imaging techniques. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology and the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. His qualifications include a medical degree from Christian Medical College Vellore, MRCP from the Royal College of Physicians, London, a PhD from the University of Cambridge and CCT in Gastroenterology and General (Internal) Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians, London.
