About me
Dr Nazir is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire (UHCW). He has a specialist interest in complex coronary intervention (angioplasty and stenting). He co-leads the Primary Angioplasty/PCI (heart attack) service at UHCW. He performs diagnostic coronary angiography (including physiological assessments using pressure wire), coronary angioplasty, rotational atherectomy, intravascular lithotripsy and intravascular Imaging (IVUS and OCT). He also co-leads the Rapid Access Chest Pain clinic service at UHCW and is currently the Coventry & Warwickshire Clinical Lead for Cardiovascular Disease.
Dr Nazir obtained his first Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience and Basic Medical Sciences (with 1st Class Honours) from the St Barts & Royal London School of Medicine & Dentistry in 2001 before obtaining his medical degree from the University of Cambridge in 2004. He consolidated his general medical training (including Cardiology) in University Hospitals Oxford and Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust. Dr Nazir then completed his research doctorate, leading a multi-centre clinical trial, in the optimal management of heart attacks at Glenfield Hospital (Leicester) and was awarded a PhD by University of Leicester in this regard. His research was published in prestigious journals and presented at both national and international conferences. He also trained in advanced cardiac imaging (cardiac MRI) during this time and subsequently accredited in CT coronary angiography. He went on to complete his general cardiology and specialist interventional cardiology training in busy and high-volume centres in the West Midlands.
Dr Nazir was awarded a one-year prestigious competitive BCIS international fellowship to hone his interventional cardiology skills at Flinders University Hospital, Adelaide in Australia where he advanced his training in complex PCI, intravascular imaging, percutaneous treatment of intracardiac shunts due to congenital lesions (PFOs and ASDs) and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for the percutaneous management of aortic valve disease. He then returned to the UK in 2019 to commence his NHS Consultant career and he has been working at UHCW since 2020.
