About me

Mr Birdsall is a very experienced Hand Specialist having completed 21 years as a Consultant Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon at Torbay Hospital where he established and led the service in single-handed practice. He has been actively engaged in training and research publishing several articles in peer reviewed journals and presenting at scientific meetings in the UK and Europe. Over his career he has been involved in large quality improvement projects to offer the best possible patient experience.
He completed his general Orthopaedic training in 2001 after spending seven years in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. During his final year he completed a National Orthopaedic-Plastic Surgery Fellowship in Hand Surgery at St. James’ University Hospital in Leeds and an Upper Limb Trauma Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA.

During his training and fellowships working with renowned Hand Specialists in the UK and overseas he mastered skills in hand and wrist surgery with a broad exposure to the management of complex conditions including microsurgery, arthroplasty, key hole surgery and major limb trauma.

Mr Birdsall is a member of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand, regularly attending their scientific meetings.

Mr Birdsall has a special interest in peripheral nerve surgery, Dupuytren’s disease, hand and wrist trauma, and arthritis of the hand and wrist including joint replacement surgery.
