About me

Mr Harland was appointed in 1998 as a full-time dedicated Spinal Neurosurgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham. He qualified as a Doctor at University College Hospital, London, before completing his training as a Neurosurgeon in both London and Cambridge. Mr Harland was awarded the Norman Dott Medal for outstanding performance in the Royal College of Surgeons’ Surgical Neurology Exit Examination.

Prior to taking up his post in Birmingham he travelled to Phoenix, Arizona, on a Royal College of Surgeons’ Supported Spinal Fellowship, learning state of the art techniques in complex spinal surgery.

Mr Harland retired from the NHS in 2022 having been the Senior Spinal Surgeon at UHB for 24 years. He regularly performed a wide variety of spinal surgical procedures, from lumbar microdiscectomy to complex reconstructions throughout the spine for degenerative, traumatic and neoplastic pathologies. Although less common, he also performed surgery for tumours within or in close proximity to the spinal cord. This can be highly challenging surgery, requiring a high level of surgical dexterity. The skills required for this type of surgery can be equally applied to more routine procedures, such as microdiscectomy. Mr Harland continues to operate on a regular basis in the private sector.

Whilst having a busy surgical practice, Mr Harland has built a reputation for his conservative approach, being keen to pursue physiotherapy, spinal manipulation and injection-type therapies whenever possible.
