About me
Dr McKay's cardiology training covered all aspects of cardiac care, and his sub-specialty training, in Manchester, UK, was focused on heart failure, treatment and therapies in advanced heart failure and complex device implantation.
After completing cardiology training in 2016, he undertook further training via a post-CCT accredited International Fellowship, gaining clinical expertise in mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplant.
He has worked as a Consultant Cardiologist in NHS Ayrshire and Arran since 2023 and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow.
Since his appointment as a Consultant Cardiologist in 2017, he has continued an NHS clinical workload in all aspects of cardiology, and maintains specialist interests in the complex evaluation and haemodynamic assessment of patients prior to transplant surgery, inherited cardiac conditions and cardiomyopathies, prediction of right ventricular (RV) support devices following complex valve intervention, and pulmonary hypertension.
Dr McKay was co-lead of the regional heart failure clinical service whilst a Consultant Cardiologist in a large, inner-city cardiac unit in Liverpool, UK, and continues to manage heart failure patients and implant cardiac devices regularly in Ayrshire. He undertakes and reports bike and pharmacological stress echo for inherited cardiac conditions and complex valve patients (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, LVOT obstruction, mitral and aortic valve disease). He is highly skilled in independently reviewing and reporting CT coronary angiography.
As a recognition of his skills and experience, Dr McKay has been awarded Fellowships of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), the American College of Cardiology (FACC), and the Heart Failure Association of the ESC (FHFA). He is a Certified Cardiac Device Specialist (CCDS), awarded by the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners, the American certification standard of excellence in cardiac device implantation.
Holding a wealth of skills, knowledge and experience, Dr McKay's focus is on providing individualised, patient-centred care and working in partnership with patients to achieve the best possible outcomes, address patient questions, and allay worries around cardiovascular health and disease.
Dr McKay is skilled in all aspects of general cardiology, including patients with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, and blood pressure problems
Dr McKay enjoys SCUBA diving and has developed a clinical interest in diving and hyperbaric medicine. Dr McKay is now a certified Dive Medicine Physician and regularly on call for the level 1 North West Emergency Recompression Unit when living and working in the North West of England.
