About us

I graduated M.B.,Ch.B. with Honours from the University of Aberdeen in July 1988. My pre-registration and surgical Senior House Officer posts were in Aberdeen. I then moved to Edinburgh to continue my Basic Surgical Training. In April 1993, I became a Research Fellow under Professor Sir David Carter in the University Department of Surgery, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, graduating M.D. with my thesis, "Inflammatory mechanisms in acute pancreatitis". In August 1995 I was appointed Career Registrar (South East of Scotland Surgical Rotation). This appointment was converted to a Specialist Registrar post, and my CCST date was July 2000. I spent the year 2000 as Senior Registrar, Department of Upper GI and HPB Surgery, Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia.

My current appointment is Consultant General and Oesophago-gastric Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. In the last few years, service commitments have results in me doing less cancer related surgery and focusing more on my specialist interests of weight loss or bariatric surgery and the management of large or recurrent incisional hernia. I have a UK referral base for the management of complex incisional hernias. I also provide inpatient and day case general surgery, elective and emergency endoscopy, and general surgery emergency cover for the Lothian Region of Scotland.

I am a past president of the British Hernia Society. I am the General Secretary for the European Hernia Society. I am Associate Editor for the Journal Obesity Surgery.
