Background
Dr Sophie Velleman, Clinical Psychologist, graduated from the University of Exeter Clinical Psychology Doctoral training programme in 2012. Sophie works primarily within the NHS offering psychological support to children, young people, and families experiencing a range of emotional, behavioural and psychological difficulties within a specialist paediatric service. Sophie is registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) and chartered with the British Psychological Society.
Sophie started her private practice alongside her NHS work in 2021 and this is focussed on supporting adults experiencing anxiety, low mood, or physical health difficulties, and with children and young people with a range of worries or low mood.
Areas of Specialist Experience
Sophie is able to provide support to parents if their children are having difficulties with behaviour, anxiety, low-mood or sleep. Sophie also has specialist experience of working with children, young people and families that have been affected by ill health, such as pain and fatigue.
Sophie has experience of providing assessments and therapy for adults concerned about a range of emotional difficulties including: anxiety and depression. In addition, Sophie is experienced in working with adults with long-term physical health difficulties such as chronic fatigue syndrome and chronic pain.
Therapeutic Approach
Sophie strongly believes that it is vitally important to build a good, strong, trusting therapeutic relationship as a base for any therapy. Every child/young person/adult/family are different and it is important to match the right therapist with the needs of that child/young person/adult/family.
Sophie draws on a number of evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
