About me
By 1988, Maurice Lau had graduated from the Universities of St. Andrews and Manchester with a BSc in medical sciences and the MBChB. He trained in the North West and became a consultant urological surgeon, fully accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons. His initial appointment, with an interest in uro-oncology, was to the Wrightington Hospital, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, in 2000. Mr Lau was then appointed to Salford Royal Hospital and The Christie in 2006, working solely in oncology. One of Mr Lau’s areas of interest is prostate cancer, undertaking open radical retropubic prostatectomies and robot assisted laparoscopic prostatectomies, as well as laparoscopic nephrectomies. He is also a member of the Northwest Robotic group. He has established transperineal ultrasound guided template biopsy of the prostate which can improve the diagnostic rate for prostate cancer, particularly in difficult cases where transrectal biopsies have been negative for cancer but the prostate specific antigen (PSA) remains elevated. In addition, Maurice Lau has helped shape penile surgery services in the North West.
