About me
Finding a therapist can be a daunting and overwhelming task. It can also be difficult to know what you are looking for. I believe that the most important aspect of any therapeutic work is the therapeutic relationship, as this is central to the work that I do.
I am a trained Counselling Psychologist, with twenty years' experience in the field of mental health. I have been a qualified counsellor for over ten years, working with people presenting with difficulties that range from mild to severe. These include people who have been bereaved, experience psychotic symptoms, struggle to regulate their emotions, and/or have experienced childhood trauma. I also have experience of leading a Counselling service within a hospice, working for a mental health charity, Mind, and in both secondary and tertiary care within the NHS. I have a keen interest in working with complex and childhood trauma as well as a number of other areas.
I work integratively, drawing from different models to find the best fit for you. I have a keen interest in working psychodynamically, whereby people may wish to work on understanding some of their unconscious motivations for their behaviour and/or understanding their relational difficulties. I also have experience working with Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), which offers skills to people who struggle to understand and regulate their emotions. Additionally, I have attended training in Mentalisation based therapy (MBT), which can help people to understand themselves and their relationships.
Furthermore, I have a keen interest in supporting parents to enhance their relationships with their children, and as a result have undertaken training in video interactive guidance (VIG). VIG is a therapeutic approach that uses video to enhance communication and strengthen relationships. You can find out more about VIG here: Video Interaction Guidance. VIG is used predominantly, but not exclusively, to enhance parental relationships and can be used across the life span.
I also have a range of different groups (parent support groups, DBT, and a bereavement group) that will be running at the beginning of September, please see my website or contact me for more information
When you start any therapeutic work, it is important that you work with someone who you feel comfortable and safe with. I aim to foster this environment by providing a non-judgemental and holding space. However, knowing if I am the right therapist for you or not will only be established through having at least one session. Therefore, I offer a free initial consultation up to 20 minutes online over Zoom. If we do decide to work together, I aim to provide you with a space where we can think about your difficulties and work through them as best we can together.
I also provide supervision to therapists and have over eight years supervision experience.
If you are interested in working together then please do not hesitate to contact me by telephone or email to arrange an initial session. In the initial session we can discuss what you would like to get from therapy and if we will feel we can work together.
