About me

Dr Barbara Carey became a Consultant in Oral Medicine at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in 2019. She is dual-qualified in medicine and dentistry, enabling her to provide the highest standards of care and bridge the interface between the two specialties. She specialises in the diagnosis and management of patients with oral cancer, potentially malignant disorders, lichen planus, oral ulceration and oral manifestations of systemic conditions. She also works in the dermatology service at St John's Institute of Dermatology managing patients with oral autoimmune blistering diseases.

As well as her clinical roles, she chairs the head and neck cancer multi-disciplinary team to co-ordinate care of head and neck cancer patients. As oral cancer lead of Guy's Cancer Academy, she helped to shape oral cancer educational resources.

Actively involved in the research of oral conditions, she has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has written multiple book chapters and guidelines. She recently co-authored the latest edition of the internationally renowned textbook, Scully's Oral & Maxillofacial Medicine and co-authored Dermatoses of the Oral Cavity and Lips in Rook's Textbook of Dermatology 10th Edition. She is actively involved in training and teaching undergraduate students and postgraduate dentists and doctors. She was deputy chair for ISFE Oral Medicine (2023-2025).

She is honorary treasurer of the British and Irish Society for Oral Medicine and former Region 1 (UK and Ireland) representative of the European Association of Oral Medicine (2018-2023).
