About me

Professor Gordon Mackay is a leading Orthopaedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine Specialist with particular expertise in ligament repair, reconstruction and accelerated rehabilitation. He has particular experience with the management of shoulder, knee and ankle instability and looks after elite athletes and professional sporting bodies but enjoys applying the latest techniques and innovations to all active patients who simply wish to return to work and activity as quickly as possible.

After studying at the universities of St Andrews and Glasgow, he took a career break as a professional footballer with Glasgow Rangers Reserves before taking a Diploma in Sports Medicine in London. His interest in both sport and medicine led to his research into ligament repair, and in particular, his development of the Internal Brace, an innovation which has transformed sports surgery care and is now the gold standard throughout the world.

Patients now travel internationally to visit Professor Mackay for cruciate ligament and other knee ligament repair and reconstruction, as well as shoulder and ankle stablisation procedures. He also developed the Knotless System for achilles repair.

His hobbies include art - in particular, painting - and he continues to hobble onto a football field to play with the Scotland over-50s eleven-a-side soccer team. With grown-up kids his family life now revolves around his wife Jackie and their Border Collie puppy.
