About me
My first degree was in Arabic Studies at Magdalene College, Cambridge University. I then was offered a post in international asset management in a Merchant Bank in the City of London but instead switched to study medicine and qualified in 1987 from the Royal London Hospital. I completed my PhD in molecular biology in 1997 at the Institute of Cancer Research.
My registrar training included a year working with patients with complex nutritional issues and Inflammatory Bowel Disease at St Mark’s Hospital, London and a further year at the Hammersmith Hospital, London.
In 2000, I was appointed Senior Lecturer at Imperial College and Honorary Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London. In 2006, I was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist in Pelvic Radiation Disease / GI Consequences of Cancer Treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London where I was the first ever gastroenterologist appointed specifically to treat the bowel side effects of cancer treatments.
Between 2000 and 2017 I raised £5 million for research projects which enrolled thousands of patients into research studies and led to the publication of 150 peer reviewed research papers. In 2016, I was granted the great honour of being appointed the Nimmo Visiting Professor at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia. In 2017, I moved my medical practice from London to Lincoln.
My expertise lies in managing patients using detailed principles developed from the results of our clinical studies. I believe the findings from the research performed by my team has revolutionised the understanding of GI consequences of cancer therapies. Many of our findings also have significant relevance for patients with benign GI disorders such as "IBS".
