About me

Dr Assad Butt is a leading UK specialist in paediatric gastroenterology and nutrition based in London and the South East with over 20 years' experience as a consultant. He successfully pioneered the development of a new specialist service in Brighton and lead its subsequent transformation to a regional tertiary centre (2002-24). His practice, both NHS and private, has attracted patients from throughout the region, seeking his experience and the best quality evidence-based opinions and treatments; since 2026, exclusively in private practice.

Dr Butt is a good listener and frank speaker, knowing the importance of engaging fully with the children, young people and families he sees, in a patient-centred practice. He works closely with like-minded multidisciplinary colleagues with emphasis on teamwork and use of best practice to deliver the best possible outcomes for patients.

He has been active in leadership roles locally and regionally (e.g. service lead) and nationally (e.g. BSPGHAN, British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Coeliac and Nutrition working groups; NICE, National Institute Clinical Excellence, Ulcerative Colitis guideline development) and taken keen interest in teaching, academic work, including research (author of book chapters, publications).

Previously, Dr Butt qualified from the University of London and completed his early training in various London teaching hospitals. He undertook paediatric gastroenterology specialist training, at a number of renowned centres of excellence both in the UK (Great Ormond Street and Royal Free Hospitals, London) and in Canada (Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto). This included, a clinical research fellowship at the Royal Free Hospital, London and postgraduate fellowship training programme at the University of Toronto, before being appointed to his UK consultant post in Brighton 2002.
