About me

Dr Louise Bowles completed her medical degree at University College London and trained as a specialist in haematology at leading London hospitals, including University College Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Hospital. Since 2008, she has worked as a Consultant in Thrombosis and Haemostasis at Barts Health NHS Trust.
Dr Bowles specialises in conditions affecting blood clotting, including both bleeding disorders and conditions where blood clots form abnormally (thrombosis). She has extensive experience diagnosing and treating deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), superficial vein thrombosis (SVT), and rarer forms of thrombosis, including clots affecting the portal vein or upper limbs.
She provides clear, personalised advice on investigations and treatment options and has wide experience in the safe management of anticoagulation (blood-thinning) medication. This includes treatment for thrombosis as well as long-term anticoagulation for conditions such as atrial fibrillation (AF). She is particularly skilled at explaining risks and benefits clearly, helping patients to make informed decisions in this complex and higher-risk area of care.
Dr Bowles is also experienced in counselling patients regarding thrombophilia testing and in the management of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).
A particular area of expertise for Dr Bowles is the impact of clotting and bleeding disorders on women's health. This includes the management of heavy menstrual bleeding, advice on safe hormonal treatment options, and care during pregnancy and fertility treatment. She is currently the lead clinician for this specialist service within her NHS role.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr Bowles holds senior leadership roles and is currently Clinical Director for Clinical Pathology at Barts Health NHS Trust, providing strategic and clinical leadership across all pathology specialties. She has authored national and local clinical guidelines in thrombosis and haemostasis and is actively involved in medical education as a teacher and examiner for the Royal College of Pathologists.
