About me

Tony Gibbon is a Consultant Orthopaedic Specialist Knee Surgeon with many years of experience of surgical techniques, including patellar stabilisation, complex primary and revision total knee replacement, meniscal cartilage repair, and complex multi-ligament reconstruction. He sees private patients at Clifton Park Hospital and York Nuffield Hospital and has been an NHS Consultant since 1997.

Whether knee symptoms are due to an acute sporting injury, grumbling "wear and tear" or end stage arthritis, Tony will have seen it before and will be able to advise the best treatment option which often doesn't involve surgery.

After grammar school in Lancashire, Tony was awarded an Open Entrance Scholarship to St Thomas' Hospital, where after an honours BSc, he qualified MB BS from the University of London.

Following basic and higher specialist surgical training in London, Essex and Norwich he was awarded two prestigious fellowships allowing him to work at Harvard Medical School and visit other US institutions.

Having completed a subsequent trauma fellowship in Austria Tony was appointed Consultant in 1997 at York Teaching Hospital, where he established a specialist knee surgery unit that treats all types of knee conditions, with the help of a multidisciplinary team, both operatively and non-operatively. Since then he has been responsible for the introduction of arthroscopic cruciate ligament reconstruction and meniscal repair as well as partial knee replacement and enhanced recovery pathways for all patients undergoing knee replacement.

Tony sees patients of all ranges and ability levels, through referrals from physiotherapists and general practitioners. He offers day case arthroscopic surgery and his team delivers an enhanced recovery program to minimise time taken to achieve optimum functional outcomes for all his patients. His research interests include analysis of knee replacement surgical techniques and functional outcomes following knee surgery.
