Mr Ben Okafor is a Senior Consultant in Orthopaedic, Trauma and Complex Spine Surgery at Whipps Cross University Hospital, Royal London Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust in London. He has held this position since 1998, with a specialist interest in Spine Surgery.
He also serves as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, where he is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Mr Okafor graduated from St. Bartholomew's Medical School, University of London. He completed his core surgical training at Charing Cross Hospital, St Mary's Hospital, and the Royal Brompton Hospital, gaining his Fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
He undertook higher specialist training in Orthopaedics through the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital/Royal Free Hospital rotation, serving as both Registrar and Senior Registrar. He achieved his FRCS (Orth) and was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST).
Mr Okafor completed a dedicated Spine Fellowship at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and University College London/Middlesex Hospital. He further expanded his expertise through international travelling fellowships in spine surgery across France, Germany, Hong Kong, the United States, and South Africa.
A committed educator, Mr Okafor is a trainer for junior doctors and specialist registrars and is a recognised GMC appraiser. He works within a multidisciplinary team that includes physiotherapists, radiologists, pain specialists and spinal surgeons at both Whipps Cross and the Royal London Hospital, where he performs complex spinal surgery.
In addition to his hospital work, he supports community-based musculoskeletal services and is actively involved in providing emergency and major trauma care within the NHS. His clinical practice encompasses a broad range of spinal procedures, including spinal injections, decompressions, discectomies, cervical spine surgery, kyphoplasty, spinal fusions, reconstructions and disc replacements.
Mr Okafor provides specialist spinal opinions to consultant colleagues�both orthopaedic and non-orthopaedic�within Whipps Cross University Hospital, Barts Health NHS and externally. He receives a high volume of referrals from across East London, Essex and neighbouring regions, as well as from general practitioners, allied health professionals and overseas sources including charitable-based overseas surgical care
