About me

Mr Matar is a dual-fellowship trained consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon with special interest in hip and knee replacements and revision surgery. He underwent his early surgical training in North Central Thames, London, and higher speciaity training in the North West including the prestigious Wrightington Hospital, renowned orthopaedic specialist centre for higher subspecialty training.

He was awarded The Charnley Latta Travelling Scholarship from the Sir John Charnley Trust to go on his fellowship at the prestigious Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Toronto, Canada. There he worked closely with internationally renowned experts in the field of joint replacement surgery and learned a number of new techniques which he brought back to the UK, and gained insight into the North American orthopaedic practice, broadening his horizon. He worked with Professor Hugh Cameron, among others, with whom he continues to collaborate on research projects. He has also trained under the distinguished Mr Peter James in Nottingham, advancing his skills in revision surgery, where he continues to work as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and is part of the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network.

Mr Matar has an abiding interest and extensive experience in orthopaedic research and has presented his award-winning research both nationally and internationally, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications. He has developed his academic interests early on in his career, working as an undergraduate research assistant in many internationally renowned UK centres, and was appointed as a research associate working on National Institute for Health Research-funded Health Technology Assessment programmes, leading to national guidelines. His research interests have recently been focussed on improving patients’ outcomes in hip and knee replacements and the promotion of evidence-based orthopaedic practice. He has also written book chapters, invited papers, and recently completed a major collaborative book on revision knee replacements, commissioned by the respected Springer Publishing.
