About me
I am a dual qualified and HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist and Sports Psychologist based in South Oxfordshire. I now work full time in private practice after working for 20 years in the NHS. During my previous employment I worked in and held leadership positions in forensic inpatient and outpatient services, and in veteran's mental health care. I have a MSc in Sport Psychology, a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership.
My current private practice is predominantly with athletes and sporting organisations, supporting them to improve performance and mental health and wellbeing. This includes helping athletes to identify and change unhelpful perfectionistic and demanding beliefs, deal with adversity such as failure and injury, manage team and organisational relationships, and cope with transition and questions about future career, as well as many other issues that sportspeople experience. I am a member of the UK Sport Institute (UKSI) Mental Health Practitioner Network. I also provide sport psychology services to an Olympic sport and clinical psychology services in professional women's cricket.
I also work with people who are not involved in professional and elite sport, again around performance and mental health and wellbeing, for example, supporting people to deal with challenges in the workplace or personal life.
I predominantly offer online therapy but I also have limited options to book face to face appointments at a clinic in south Oxfordshire.
I am trained in several psychological approaches but my preferred psychological approach is Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). This is a talking therapy that helps people identify and change negative thought patterns and beliefs that are causing emotional distress and problematic, goal blocking behaviours. It is based on philosophical principles that our emotions are not caused by events per se, but by our interpretation of those events.
REBT is a change based therapy and is founded on the belief that people have the power to change their thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Although it can be helpful to understand the why behind our negative thought patterns, REBT is a present and future based therapy and as such, long explorations of a person's past are not seen as necessary in order to make change going forward.
REBT can be very effective in treating a wide range of emotional and behavioural challenges, including depression, anxiety, anger, and procrastination. It is pan-diagnostic, meaning it can be used for all sorts of psychiatric diagnoses or none at all, as the focus is on the relationship between a person's thoughts, beliefs, emotions and behaviour rather than on a specific condition.
