About me
Mr Turnbull specialises in corneal, cataract and refractive surgery. Towards the end of his UK training programme, he completed a Corneal Fellowship at University Hospital Southampton. During this he also spent four weeks in North America receiving advanced training in complex cataract surgery, iris reconstruction and laser eye surgery in Toronto and Cincinnati.
After being appointed by the Royal Bournemouth Hospital as an NHS Consultant in 2018, Mr Turnbull undertook a prestigious second Corneal and Refractive Fellowship in Australia with one of the pioneers of modern cataract surgery, Professor Graham Barrett. After further training in laser refractive surgery, including LASIK and Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE), in Adelaide, Bangalore and London, Mr Turnbull worked as a Vision Correction Consultant at Optegra Eye Hospital Hampshire from 2020 to 2022. He has now moved his private practice closer to home and his NHS base, practising at Nuffield Health Bournemouth and Private Health University Hospitals Dorset.
Mr Turnbull is committed to training the next generation of eye surgeons and instructs on the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Microsurgical Skills programme, as well as teaching junior ophthalmologists in the Wessex region. Mr Turnbull was awarded a Distinction in the Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery and now teaches on the course.
Mr Turnbull is actively involved with clinical research aimed at improving the outcomes for patients undergoing eye surgery. He regularly presents his work nationally and internationally and has over 20 peer-reviewed publications in the academic literature.
One of Mr Turnbull’s key areas of expertise is the use of toric lenses to manage astigmatism and refractive error during cataract and lens replacement surgery. Mr Turnbull is pleased to offer small incision cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange with toric, multifocal and extended depth of focus intraocular lenses, as well as the full range of modern refractive procedures including SMILE, LASIK, advanced surface ablation and implantable contact lenses.
