About me
In 1999, Mike was appointed Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon in Bath, where he has practised ever since across both NHS and independent sectors. From early in his career, he set out to specialise in the management of colorectal disease - an ambition inspired by influential mentorship and sustained by a clear commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
Demonstrating a strong commitment to continuous professional development, and unlike many of his peers at the time, Mike trained in laparoscopic surgery whilst already a consultant after recognising the benefits for patients. He has seen first-hand the improvements in recovery and patient outcomes associated with minimally invasive techniques. Motivated by the same principles, he also undertook training in laparoscopic hernia repair. He believes patients benefit most from consulting a surgeon who is very experienced in both open and laparoscopic approaches, enabling balanced and individualised advice tailored to their needs.
Having retired from his main NHS colorectal cancer surgeon post, Mike continues to utilise his vast experience of GI conditions by undertaking regular colonoscopy lists and treating haemorrhoids and other proctological conditions. He employs a range of modern techniques so that treatment can be carefully tailored - balancing optimal outcomes with postoperative comfort and recovery. Mike has also had more time to develop his longtime interest in groin and abdominal wall hernia repair, feeling equally comfortable in both laparoscopic and open techniques, including local anaesthetic repair. Patients frequently comment on his ability to explain complex conditions and treatments clearly and accessibly, helping them feel informed, reassured, and confident in their decisions.
Outside of surgery, Mike enjoys hill and coastal path walking, skiing, sailing (now less frequently), and more recently, rowing. His wife is a GP who also works in the local Emergency Department, and they have three sons - none of whom have chosen a career in medicine.
