About me
Alastair Windsor is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon recently retired from the NHS having been on the consultant staff at:
St James University Hospital, Leeds. (1997 – 1999)
St Mark’s Hospital, London. (1999 – 2006)
University College Hospital London. (2006 – 2019)
With over twenty years of Consultant experience and expertise he maintains a very busy specialist referral practice in colorectal surgery working out of London Digestive Surgery in Welbeck Street and operating at the Princess Grace Hospital, The London Clinic and King Edward VII in London.
His long term clinical focus has been to a large extent on the management of complex inflammatory bowel disease and its surgical complications. He was formally surgical lead for the national intestinal failure unit at St Mark's Hospital and surgical lead for the intestinal failure unit at UCLH. Part of our work in the IF Unit is also the management of complex and recurrent incisional hernias. He has an equally busy national referral practice in abdominal wall reconstruction.He is a board member of the British Hernia Society and organised and co chaired the first Abdominal Wall Reconstruction meeting in Europe in February 2016 now in its sixth year.
He continues to care for many patients with colorectal cancer. He is Chairman of the GI Tumour Board at HCA Healthcare in London and also Chair of the Colorectal Cancer Multidisciplinary Team.
He also has a busy tertiary referral practice in the management of complex rectovaginal endometriosis along side expert gynaecologist Mr Alfred Cutner, and is a founder member of the Endometriosis Centre at King Edward VII Hospital in London.
He was a founder member of Surgical European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation and a former committee member of the IBD section of British Society of Gastroenterology. Working with these organisations I have been a contributing author for ECCO and BSG guidelines on the management of IBD.
In addition, he has maintained interest and clinical practice in the broader aspects of colorectal surgery including, diverticular disease, incontinence, prolapse and sphincter injury, and proctology (fissures, fistula and haemorrhoids).
He has over one hundred and thirty peer reviewed publications and book chapters and remain a committed surgical researcher, trainer and educator.
