About me
I have been a consultant ophthalmic surgeon for over 25 years and currently working at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Royal Edinburgh Infirmary and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Young People in Edinburgh. Prior to this, I completed my general ophthalmic training in rotations based in Dublin, Cambridge, Aberdeen and Sheffield. During my training, I successfully became the Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Ireland and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London. I completed my subspecialty paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus (squint) training at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, University College of Los Angeles, U.S.A.
I am a cataract surgeon with special interest in adult small incision cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange and multifocal lens surgery, paediatric ophthalmology and manage the full range of paediatric ocular and neuro-ophthalmological conditions, from the common such as strabismus, amblyopia (lazy eye) and blocked tear ducts (sticky eyes), to rarer ophthalmic conditions, such as congenital cataracts and retinopathy of prematurity. In addition to my paediatric practice, I also undertake general adult ophthalmic consultations and surgery including small incision cataract surgery and multifocal lens implantation surgery, I am a registered member of the European Society of cataract and refractive surgery, American Association of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and British Isles of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Association.
I perform cataract surgery and laser treatment on infants and children and have performed over 7,000 adult cataract operations with a very low complication rate (National Ophthalmic Database figures) I perform over 30 to 40 squint operations per year.
In addition to my clinical work I am very interested in research in Ophthalmology and I have published more than 50 papers in peer reviewed national and international ophthalmic, genetic and radiology journals. I am also interested in education, training and teaching and a Honorary Senior Lecturer of University of Edinburgh.
