About me

Hello, I'm Helen. I'm a counsellor and psychotherapist with over 18 years' experience working in the NHS, GP surgeries, staff counselling services, charities and private practice. Alongside my clinical work, I have extensive experience supervising counsellors, delivering training and managing counselling services.

My approach is integrative, this means I draw on different therapeutic models depending on what is most likely to be helpful for you, rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach. At the heart of my work is a belief that therapy should feel safe, respectful and collaborative. I aim to understand you as a whole person - not just your symptoms - and to work at a pace that feels right for you.

Clients often describe me as warm, calm and thoughtful. I offer a space where all parts of you are welcome, including those that may feel painful, confusing, or hard to talk about.

I offer face-to-face sessions from my private, discreet office at the Roy Fletcher Centre in Shrewsbury, as well as online sessions via Zoom. I offer both short-term and longer-term therapy. Some people come for a few sessions to work through a specific difficulty, while others choose ongoing support to explore deeper or more longstanding issues. We would regularly review how the work is going and make sure it continues to feel helpful and relevant for you.

My way of working is collaborative. This might involve helping you make sense of your experiences, noticing patterns that may be keeping you stuck, learning ways to regulate difficult emotions, or gently processing past experiences that continue to affect you in the present. For some people the work is more reflective; for others it is more structured and skills-based. We would decide this together.

I welcome clients of all backgrounds and identities and am committed to inclusive, anti-discriminatory practice. I recognise how social, cultural and systemic factors can affect wellbeing and aim to work in a way that is respectful, reflective and responsive to difference.

The first session is an opportunity for us to meet and see how it feels to talk together. You can ask any questions you may have and I'll invite you to share what has brought you to therapy at this point in your life. I'll also ask some questions to help me understand your situation and what you might want from therapy. This session also helps me think carefully about how best to support you if we decide to work together. There is no pressure or expectation to go into anything you're not ready to talk about. At the end of the first session, you may choose to book further appointments or take some time to reflect before deciding whether you'd like to continue. Either option is completely fine.

If you'd like to arrange an initial appointment or ask anything further, please get in touch. I'd be happy to hear from you.
