About me
Mr Mustansir Alibhai is a highly respected Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, known for his advanced surgical expertise, compassionate approach, and dedication to exceptional patient care. With dual qualifications in medicine and dentistry, he specialises in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of conditions affecting the face, mouth, jaws, and neck with a particular focus on head and neck cancer and complex facial reconstruction.
Currently practising at the internationally renowned Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London, Mr Alibhai brings extensive experience in both adult and paediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery. His areas of expertise include head and neck cancer surgery, microvascular reconstruction, jaw tumours, facial trauma, salivary gland disease, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, benign oral lesions, and dentoalveolar surgery.
Mr Alibhai began his academic journey by earning a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from the University of Liverpool in 2001. He later went on to study medicine at King's College London, graduating with distinction in both clinical sciences and medicine in 2008 (MBBS).
Following this, he was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS) in 2010 and Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (FRCS OMFS) in 2015. He also holds Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) of the Royal College.
His postgraduate surgical training was completed in London, culminating in a prestigious Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. There, he developed advanced skills in microvascular surgery and perforator flap dissection, which form the foundation of his reconstructive practice.
Mr Alibhai's consultant career began at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where he gained valuable experience treating complex craniofacial and oncological conditions in children. He later held locum consultant posts at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and Bart's Health NHS Trusts, before being appointed as a substantive Consultant at UCLH in 2017.
During his time at UCLH, he also served as Associate Clinical Lead for Head and Neck Surgery from 2019, contributing to service development and multidisciplinary collaboration. In 2020, he joined Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial / Head and Neck Surgery.
Mr Alibhai's clinical focus spans a wide range of conditions, including:
Head and neck cancers
Microvascular reconstruction following cancer surgery
Jaw tumours and facial reconstruction
Facial trauma and injury repair
Salivary gland tumours and stone disease
TMJ pain and dysfunction
Benign oral lesions and dentoalveolar surgery
His multidisciplinary approach ensures each patient receives personalised, evidence-based care often involving collaboration with oncologists, radiologists, dentists, and speech and language therapists.
Deeply committed to surgical education and mentorship, Mr Alibhai has held several educational roles, including Assigned Educational Supervisor and Educational Lead in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UCLH, and Clinical Supervisor to specialist registrars within the London Deanery.
He continues to support the development of junior surgeons and is currently an Assigned Educational Supervisor at Guy's Hospital. In recognition of his outstanding patient care, he was awarded a patient-nominated accolade by UCLH in 2019.
Known for his calm, empathetic manner, Mr Alibhai takes time to listen to his patients, explain diagnoses clearly, and guide them through their treatment journey with reassurance and professionalism. He believes that effective communication and teamwork are central to achieving the best outcomes, especially within the complex field of head and neck surgery.
Outside of his clinical work, Mr Alibhai enjoys swimming and staying active, valuing a balanced lifestyle that supports both physical and mental wellbeing.
