About me
Mr Hunter was born and raised in South Yorkshire. He trained in Nottingham, Sheffield, London and Cambridge. He has been a Consultant Cardiothoracic surgeon for 23 years.
Mr Hunter is an internationally recognised Heart Surgeon with extensive experience in minimal access heart surgery and surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation.
In 2003 Mr Hunter began a minimal access Atrial Fibrillation Surgery programme and became only the second surgeon in the world to perform this procedure. Part of this treatment involves the application of a clip to an area of the heart called the left atrial appendage in order to reduce the risk of stroke, which may result from clot formation in this appendage. Mr Hunter was the first surgeon in the world to apply this clip using keyhole surgery. Mr Hunter has performed around 6000 heart operations with over 2000 mitral valve repairs, many of these are minimal access. He is one of four surgeons in Sheffield who specialise in mitral (and tricuspid) valve reconstruction surgery
